A Combat Controller (CCT) is a highly trained special operations airman in the U.S. Air Force, whose primary role is to coordinate and manage air traffic in combat zones. These elite operators are part of the Air Force Special Tactics community and are often embedded with other special operations forces such as Navy SEALs or Army Special Forces. Their mission includes directing close air support, air strikes, and ensuring safe landings and take-offs in hostile environments. Combat Controllers are also skilled in reconnaissance, demolition, and battlefield medicine, making them versatile assets in a wide range of military operations.

The origins of Combat Controllers trace back to World War II, when the need for tactical air control on the battlefield became apparent. The formal establishment of the Combat Control career field occurred in 1953 during the Korean War, where they were tasked with directing air support and controlling airfields under combat conditions. Throughout the Vietnam War, these airmen gained recognition for their ability to manage air traffic under enemy fire, playing a pivotal role in directing air strikes. Over the years, Combat Controllers have continued to evolve, becoming integral to modern special operations, particularly in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other global conflicts.

Combat Controllers bring a unique blend of expertise that enhances military operations. Their ability to seamlessly integrate with both air and ground forces makes them indispensable in joint operations. They are trained not only in air traffic control but also in a wide range of combat skills, including scuba diving, parachuting, and survival tactics. Their adaptability in extreme conditions allows them to provide real-time coordination of air support in even the most chaotic environments. This combination of technical proficiency and combat readiness positions Combat Controllers as critical force multipliers on the battlefield, ensuring mission success and the safety of allied troops.
